About Us

The Butterfly Foundation

The Butterfly Foundation a 501(c)(3) community development organization founded in 2007 is in the business of human development by providing assistance in the areas of housing and job readiness and training. Our mission is… to empower, transform and transition the lives of economically challenged individuals and families into self-sufficient and self-confident citizens. Our overarching strategy is to “meet individuals where they are and provide the essential resource they need to reach the nest step toward self-sufficiency." Currently, The Butterfly Foundation conducted a multi-county housing program funded by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Butterfly Housing Assistance Program (BHAP) provides housing to individuals and families with disabilities and chronically homeless. BHAP expanded services to include providing Emergency Housing Repairs to low-income homeowners.

In October 2010 The Culinary Job Training Program was formed to prepare the unemployed, underemployed, previously incarcerated and homeless adults for a career in the food service industry. The Mary Black Foundation and the City of Spartanburg provided the funding and space to conduct the first 12 week class. As of December 2018 eighteen classes have been conducted with One -hundred & sixty-one participants and maintaining an 85% full-time job placement rate. The Culinary Job Program requires a significant amount of community support and resources.  For a complete list of supporters click on Programs. September 2011, The Butterfly Foundation was one of 16 grantees awarded funding from The Department of Health and Human Services under the Healthy Food Financing Initiative to build a project on the Northside of Spartanburg SC. The project includes our partners, HUB City Farmers Market, The Mary Black Foundation, city of Spartanburg.
